Ballerina Sketch

Degas Copy - Ballerina Sketch
12" x 8.25"
Vine Charcoal, Graphite, Compressed White Charcoal and Pastel on Paper

These Degas copies are helping me on the path towards my own voice with the figure.  Meanwhile, enjoy these, and keep a good thought for the master, Edgar Degas.

Whenever I am in an art museum, I am quick to check for Degas' work. Once found, I must stand in front of it to study his mastery of the figure. This is the kind of work behind the work that really pays big dividends. Excellent work!

Very nice.
I love his ballerinas...and he did a lot of them...but I read that he was actually afraid that people would later think of him as "the ballerina painter." And I think that's what happened. Probably best that he doesn't know it occurred after all.

That's one I didn't know. I guess Degas could have been the nude lady by the tub painter, or the horse guy. But - what a ballerina painter he was!

I love your freedom in it. You gave personality to it, beyond the copy. Congratulations.
